Marlborough Highways are committed to minimising the environmental impact of our operations; we reduce, re-use and recycle as much as possible as part of our waste management and sustainable construction procedures.
With carbon reduction at the centre of the Government’s Construction Strategy and many local authorities working to achieve net zero targets by 2030, we offer a range of environmentally friendly solutions to our clients right across the business from surfacing, highway maintenance, road marking, traffic management, street lighting to infrastructure projects.
Enfield Council is an example of one of our clients who recently trialled an environmentally sustainable surfacing solution to achieve a reduced carbon footprint on carriageway resurfacing works, using a rubber modified asphalt which incorporates warm mix asphalt (WMA) technology.
WMA is better for the environment, road users and residents because it is manufactured and laid at lower temperatures than conventional hot mix asphalt, resulting in lower CO₂ emissions during production. Site safety is also improved with reduced fumes and steam on site and a reduced risk of burns. Laying at lower temperatures also means less cooling time between courses, increasing the amount of material that can be laid and because it sets quicker, a road can open sooner which not only benefits residents but our operatives too who will spend less time exposed to traffic during roadworks.
The successful trial in Enfield used rubber modified (warm mix) asphalt; rubber tyres which would have gone into landfill but instead, were converted into new roads to help to offset the environmental impact of highways maintenance activities. The carbon footprint of this sustainable solution was around 8% lower than conventional asphalt which is really positive for all concerned.
Marlborough has over 25 years of industry experience and expertise in public realm, regeneration and infrastructure projects. We have built our business around the needs of our clients and their specifications and are proud to promote environmental solutions to help reduce carbon emission wherever we can. Marlborough are certified ISO 14001 for Environmental Management and have also achieved the ‘Carbon Footprint Standard’ award, for our efforts in reducing our C0₂ emissions.
