Marlborough Highways has a long and proud history of employing military veterans, and in March 2022 signed the Armed Forces Covenant as part of its commitment to both active and former service personnel. It is a pledge that the company acknowledges and understands that those who serve or who have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the community. Working with the Career Transition Partnership, Marlborough supports the employment of veterans, and endeavours to offer them the training and flexibility that they need to flourish in their career, while maintaining their relationship with the Armed Forces. Antony Jackman spent more than a decade in the army and joined Marlborough in February 2021 as a Traffic Management Operative.
Background
Antony grew up in the large bustling town of Llanelli in South Wales, where he had a love for rugby and for cars. He left school aged 16, and after briefly considering a career as a mechanic, he decided to join the army, motivated by the opportunity to quickly pass his driving test and to travel the world. Antony undertook basic training at Glencorse Barracks, just outside Edinburgh, before joining the Royal Logistic Corps, where he rose to the rank of Corporal during an illustrious 11-year career. Highlights included tours of Bosnia and Kosovo, where Antony participated in vital UN and NATO led peace keeping and stabilisation missions, helping to win the hearts and minds of the local populations alongside international colleagues. While there were challenging and sometimes dangerous experiences during his time in the army, Antony is in no doubt that his military career was an overwhelmingly positive one, which has helped shape his personality – instilling discipline, work-ethic, and pride in performance.
Marlborough Highways career
After leaving the army, Antony initially worked in the cavity wall insulation and energy assessment industries, before taking up a career in traffic management. He knew Marlborough by reputation and during the interview process highlighted his military experience and the transferable skills acquired while serving. On joining the company, he was given the training and other support needed to quickly integrate into the team, fast becoming an indispensable member of Marlborough’s Traffic Management department. During the company induction phase, Antony notes that long serving Marlborough colleague and fellow veteran Chris Wood, went above and beyond in welcoming him to the organisation, bonding over their shared military experience. Today the company provides Antony with the flexibility he needs to live a balanced work and personal life, allowing him to dedicate the time he desires to his family, and to maintain relationships with former military colleagues.

“I just wanted to say what a pleasure it has been to work with Marlborough Highways over the last six months. The quality of work is superb, and there has been some excellent collaboration between Milestone and Marlborough to complete, what at times, has been quite a challenging scheme. I hope to work with Marlborough on another project in the near future.”

“Marlborough worked with us in constructing a 1.3km cycle track. There were a number of technical difficulties to overcome, and their gifted foreman worked to propose some innovative solutions to the challenges we faced. The result is a facility that the locals are proud of, providing walkers and cyclists with alternative access to the hospital and nearby school. The scheme was a lot of hard work, but well worth it.”
Rob Venables, NEC Project Manager, Essex County Council
“Marlborough attracts people who take care and have pride in their work. Several gangs of Operatives worked tirelessly for six months to reconstruct drainage networks, lay more than 3km of high quality bespoke granite kerbs and granite channels blocks to ensure positive drainage. The technical compliance, attention to detail and level of quality finish along the entire carriageway was exceptional”.
Mark Chiverrell, Technical Director, Project Centre
