Marlborough Highways have helped to transform a section of Hornchurch Country Park into a Covid Memorial Woodland, working in partnership with the London Borough of Havering. The Woodland honours the significant efforts by key workers and residents of Havering which kept the borough safe during the pandemic but also offers a suitable space to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives, family or loved ones.
The new woodland area in Hornchurch Country Park comprises of central memorial stone surrounded by a bespoke built half-moon shaped bench, an approach path that provides access for elderly and disabled residents with hand-finished carvings set into the ground, a hollow which will hold rainwater providing a seasonal wetland and 14 memorial benches offering a quiet place for visitors to reflect.
The Mayor of Havering John Mylod, Deputy Lieutenant of Havering, Nick Bracken OBE, Councillor Damian White and members of the community attended the grand opening alongside Marlborough Highways’ Operations Director, Andy Scotter and Assistant Project Manager, Jamie Bird.
