We are delighted to be continuing our work in partnership with Islington Council to deliver further improvements to Clerkenwell Green’s public realm in North London. Proposals to improve the Green were publicly consulted on in 2017, receiving support from 82% of respondents. The purpose of delivering the scheme is to create a greener, safer and more pleasant space for local people, making it easier for them to walk, cycle and to use buggies and wheelchairs.
A second phase of works began on 5 February 2024. The second phase of works provides footway widening for those walking and wheeling, with additional crossing points, and improvements to the junction at Farringdon Lane. This adds to the additional 1,700 square metres of public space created by the first phase of works, which represented a 68% increase in public space and a 51% reduction in road space. Further new trees, planting and seating will be introduced to encourage residents and visitors to stop and stay in the Green for longer. The second phase of the scheme will also further improve the setting for the area’s historic buildings and local landmarks, helping to showcase the community’s rich cultural heritage.
Keeping disruption to a minimum
Throughout the period of works, it is expected that there may be some disruption such as noise and obstructed footpaths and roads. We will engage with residents and work with local businesses to ensure that any such disruption is kept to a minimum. We will also endeavour to keep the community informed by displaying information and responding to anyone with questions or concerns.
Phase 2 overview:
Client: Islington Council
Project:
Improving air quality and making the area more pleasant by planting new trees and areas of new planting on the Green.
Footway widening and carriageway narrowing, reducing road danger and improving the experience of footways users walking, wheeling and using buggies.
Introducing new paved areas, and replacing some existing paving with new Yorkstone paving and granite setts.
Making it easier to walk, cycle, and use buggies and wheelchairs by closing the junction of Clerkenwell Road and Clerkenwell Green to motor vehicles.
Making the Green a less car-dominated space by removing 42 parking spaces.
Ensuring that more people can enjoy the historic environment by introducing new seating and cycle parking.

“Clerkenwell Green is one of the borough’s most historic, popular spaces, and we’re determined to maximise its potential as an environmentally-friendly, green, welcoming space that everyone can enjoy. The major improvements that we’re making to the Green will help boost biodiversity, improve air quality, and make it a more attractive area for the thousands of people that use it every day. Alongside the Clerkenwell Green people-friendly streets neighbourhood, the changes will help make it easier and safer for local people to walk, cycle, and use buggies and wheelchairs.”

“From the design stage, Marlborough has been fundamental in delivering the Broad Lane Square improvements scheme. During the works, not only did the team manage to keep to the programme, but they went the extra mile to ensure attention to detail and came up with innovative solutions to address issues encountered on site. My thanks on behalf of Haringey goes out to Marlborough for their dedication to deliver.”

“I just wanted to say what a pleasure it has been to work with Marlborough Highways over the last six months. The quality of work is superb, and there has been some excellent collaboration between Milestone and Marlborough to complete, what at times, has been quite a challenging scheme. I hope to work with Marlborough on another project in the near future.”
Colin Hill, Schemes Manager, Milestone Infrastructure
“Marlborough worked with us in constructing a 1.3km cycle track. There were a number of technical difficulties to overcome, and their gifted foreman worked to propose some innovative solutions to the challenges we faced. The result is a facility that the locals are proud of, providing walkers and cyclists with alternative access to the hospital and nearby school. The scheme was a lot of hard work, but well worth it.”
Rob Venables, NEC Project Manager, Essex County Council
“Marlborough attracts people who take care and have pride in their work. Several gangs of Operatives worked tirelessly for six months to reconstruct drainage networks, lay more than 3km of high quality bespoke granite kerbs and granite channels blocks to ensure positive drainage. The technical compliance, attention to detail and level of quality finish along the entire carriageway was exceptional”.
Mark Chiverrell, Technical Director, Project Centre
“We saw huge benefits in appointing Marlborough as our full service contractor and we’re impressed – they’ve delivered consistent high quality service and superior quality control across every project. Marlborough, provide us with a ‘one-stop’ shop solution – we get the same quality of service and better control across all aspects of the project.”
