Daniel is a highly skilled highways electrician, with extensive experience and specialist knowledge in cutting-edge LED equipment and Electric Vehicle charging technology. A hugely valued member of the Marlborough Highways team, Daniel works across several contracts in London, contributing to the day-to-day maintenance of complex electrical systems and playing a crucial role in the delivery of major infrastructure projects.
Background
Growing up in Ilford in East London, Daniel has always had an interest in electrics and technology, believing that there is no substitute for practical, on-the-job learning. Following in the footsteps of his father, he started working in the construction industry aged just 17, enjoying a variety of roles during his career. Always in employment, Daniel studied at Barking & Dagenham College, balancing his work and academic commitments for three years to become a fully qualified electrician. As his expertise expanded and his responsibilities grew, Daniel found himself working closely with Marlborough in the London Borough of Hackney. Admired for the quality of his work and his pragmatic approach to electrical engineering, Daniel soon came to the attention of Marlborough’s street lighting team, who were impressed by the level of his technical ability.
Marlborough Highways career
Excited by the company’s rapid growth and attracted by the organisation’s reputation for having a flexible and supportive working culture, Daniel joined Marlborough in November 2020. Based at the Garman Road office in North London, he supports our contracts across the capital, using his technical expertise to upgrade and maintain street lighting and other electrical systems. Helping to create safer, more attractive, and more sustainable environments for residents and road users, Daniel is involved in the positioning of new columns, circuitry works, electrical inspections, and the role out of state-of-the-art Circuit Monitoring Systems. As well as scheduled works, which increasingly includes the installation of electric vehicle charging points, Daniel takes part in essential emergency call outs, quickly and expertly repairing any damaged equipment. His varying duties also include works to residential spaces, maintaining and enhancing lighting in communal outdoor areas as part of Marlborough’s commitments to social and council housing in the London Borough of Hackney.

A day in the life
0630 Arrives at Marlborough’s Garman Road office for a daily briefing from the in-house Contracts Agent and has breakfast with colleagues.
0700 Daniel carries out an audit and safety checks of electrical equipment and PPE, before departing in a company vehicle to the London Borough of Hackney.
0730 Arrives on residential road in Hackney and with the assistance of colleagues, ensures that the site is fully compliant with health and safety regulations before starting works.
0800 – 1000 Digging takes place, with the removal and recycle of old street lighting columns, making way for new durable posts, which are stylish and more in fitting with the urban environment.
1000 – 1200 With the use of an innovative lightweight MEWP (colloquially known as a cherry-picker) Daniel works on a variety of street lighting types, installing new circuits, and converting bulbs and transformers to LED.
1200 Breaks for lunch, providing Daniel with the opportunity to catch up with colleagues at a local café.
1245 After clearing the site, Daniel travels to a nearby residential block, to carry out essential electrical maintenance work on the site’s outdoor lighting system.
1400 Daniel receives a notification on his phone via Marlborough’s digital business management system QUEST. A nearby streetlight has been damaged, and now poses a risk to road users. After quickly and safely concluding his existing job, he heads to the site to meet colleagues. Daniel carries out emergency repairs and files an online report on his tablet, which can be reviewed by Hackney Council in real-time.
1530 Arrives at the Garman Road office and carries out final checks on his equipment, before storing it safely and securely.
1600 Departs for Chadwell Heath’s Golf Kingdom driving range to meet and socialise with friends.
