Our Planet Matters
Marlborough Highways understands that operating in a sustainable way is vital for the well-being of our planet, our customers, and the communities in which we serve. It is also essential for the long-term success of our organisation, with staff across the business passionately committed to working in a greener and cleaner way. In collaboration with our clients and our industry partners, we want to be a leader in the decarbonisation of the construction industry, by placing responsibility and sustainability at the heart of our growth strategy.
Our Sustainability Pillars
Marlborough has identified six pillars that are key to our strategic approach to sustainability. Each one embodies our ambition to use more eco-friendly materials and to improve our environmental practices wherever we operate.
Transport & Plant
Not only are we committed to switching our fleet to electric and to installing charging points at our depots, but we are also monitoring staff driving behaviour to help them travel more efficiently. Where possible we use electric plant machinery, but also use cleaner biofuels including Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil.
Energy
We have transitioned all our utility tariffs to 100% renewable and are investing in green power supplies across the business. Marlborough already has solar panels at our Head Office in Chelmsford, with a commitment to improving energy efficiency at each of our regional depots.
Materials
We are committed to working with clients, to explore low-carbon design solutions and have developed an in-house carbon footprint calculator that evaluates all our construction emissions on any given project or long-term contract. The tool helps our clients to make more informed decisions when selecting their materials, allowing us to reduce emissions.
Waste
Marlborough recycles and reuses materials throughout the business and we are proud to divert 100% of all construction waste from landfill.
Supply Chain
Through collaboration with our supply chain partners, Marlborough are committed to using more sustainable materials and to employing greener working practices. We monitor and record the emissions lifecycles of projects across the business, continually improving the way in which we operate.
Biodiversity
We create greener spaces in the communities that we work in, introducing plants and other foliage, and installing sustainable drainage systems. Marlborough is also committed to planting one tree per carbon dioxide equivalent produced per contract to reduce emissions and improve air quality.
Committed to Carbon Neutrality by 2025
Marlborough is dedicated to becoming Carbon Neutral by the end of 2025 in support of the UK Government’s deadline of Net Zero by 2050. We are cutting our direct emissions to a minimum and working in partnership with our suppliers and clients to reduce the carbon footprint that results from third parties. Where we are unable to eliminate emissions entirely, we are investing in offsetting schemes, including in developing countries, helping us to deliver carbon neutrality across the entire business.
ISO 14001 and PAS 2080 Certified
As an organisation committed to resource efficiency, waste reduction and environmental responsibility, Marlborough have been an ISO 14001 accredited organisation since 2015.
We also take steps to reduce whole-life carbon throughout the delivery of our infrastructure projects. This dedication strengthens our carbon neutral commitment, and has earned us PAS 2080 certification.

Our Plan
“One of the things I value most is their very collaborative and transparent team culture. It makes a big difference to have a contractor that wants to work closely with us and is supportive and responsive. With Marlborough, I get a team who are attentive, work collaboratively and honestly with me and don’t lose focus on delivering first class communications and compliance.”
“From the design stage, Marlborough has been fundamental in delivering the Broad Lane Square improvements scheme. During the works, not only did the team manage to keep to the programme, but they went the extra mile to ensure attention to detail and came up with innovative solutions to address issues encountered on site. My thanks on behalf of Haringey goes out to Marlborough for their dedication to deliver.”
“Working alongside our Term Service Contractor Marlborough Highways, we successfully completed renovations to the Crowstone Footbridge. The designs were provided by Marlborough, and the work was unique. The scheme was completed to budget and ahead of its programme duration.”
“I would like to thank you and your team for your efforts, the Marlborough crews were professional, courteous, and hard working all day and ensured the event went without a hitch. You and the team were a credit to the company, demonstrating commitment and support to the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.”
“I just wanted to say what a pleasure it has been to work with Marlborough Highways over the last six months. The quality of work is superb, and there has been some excellent collaboration between Milestone and Marlborough to complete, what at times, has been quite a challenging scheme. I hope to work with Marlborough on another project in the near future.”
“Marlborough worked with us in constructing a 1.3km cycle track. There were a number of technical difficulties to overcome, and their gifted foreman worked to propose some innovative solutions to the challenges we faced. The result is a facility that the locals are proud of, providing walkers and cyclists with alternative access to the hospital and nearby school. The scheme was a lot of hard work, but well worth it.”
“Marlborough attracts people who take care and have pride in their work. Several gangs of Operatives worked tirelessly for six months to reconstruct drainage networks, lay more than 3km of high quality bespoke granite kerbs and granite channels blocks to ensure positive drainage. The technical compliance, attention to detail and level of quality finish along the entire carriageway was exceptional”.
“We saw huge benefits in appointing Marlborough as our full service contractor and we’re impressed – they’ve delivered consistent high quality service and superior quality control across every project. Marlborough, provide us with a ‘one-stop’ shop solution – we get the same quality of service and better control across all aspects of the project.”
