Overview:
Enfield Council needed to find an effective and efficient way to incorporate carriageway resurfacing and road marking into structural bridge repairs. A works programme to minimise road closures and traffic diversions to hundreds of nearby industrial and retail park businesses and residents, also had to be found.
The project at Conduit Lane had many other operational and logistical challenges including:
- Finding an effective value engineering method and solution for all parties
- Heavy pre-planning for work-schedules for surfacing and road marking teams
- Organisation of night-time shifts for traffic management from 8:00pm to 5:00am
- Keeping the engineering supply chain partner continually engaged
The Challenge
The London Borough of Enfield is located near to one of North London’s busiest major roads – the A406 – a road that is in constant use 24 hours and day; connecting North to East and West London whilst providing a key route to Kent, Essex and Cambridge. Around 2,000 m2 of deck on the bridge had become worn and needed to be assessed to avoid further carriageway deterioration.
The Solution
Working as a Tier 1 contractor, Marlborough delivered a complete full-service solution: advice on materials and buildabilty for the project, bridge deck expansion joints and structural engineering solutions and night-time, shift construction work and traffic management co-ordination.
Works included:
- Break out of old joints, temporary reinstatement
- Expansion joint replacement
- Planning out and laying of around 2,000 m2of road
- Mobilising of 2 joint crews to reduce road closures
Project Outcomes
Marlborough’s team completed an intense project with unforeseen engineering challenges in less than one week. Permanent direct lines of contact at director and senior levels for planning, logistics and engineering maintained clear and open communications. Early planning for night-time only construction works and a large traffic management team, ensured resident and business disruption was kept to bare minimum, and the project was completed on time.
