Marlborough Highways has a long and proud history of supporting the Armed Forces community, celebrating the valuable contribution that they have made to our society and giving thanks for the service and sacrifice that they have made for others. On 13 November 2022, Marlborough’s Traffic Management division supported Southend-on-Sea City Council with three Remembrance Day Events on the Essex Coast.

Each year, Marlborough works with Southend-on-Sea City Council and local Armed Forces groups on the organisation of Armistice Day events. Commemorations take place in communities throughout the authority, with residents and military personnel given the opportunity to pay their respects to those who have served in the two World Wars and in more recent conflicts. In 2022, Marlborough was tasked with managing events in Shoeburyness, Southend-on-Sea, and Leigh-on-Sea, with logistical support needed, including the management of road closures in and around the parade sites. While the safety and wellbeing of participants, spectators and the wider public was the number one priority, it was also important that traffic disruption was kept to a minimum, with streets and civic spaces needing to re-open quickly after the events.
Marlborough conducted extensive pre-planning in partnership with the event organisers and Southend-on-Sea City Council before a strict programme of works was devised. The three communities were given advanced warning of road closures, with diversion signs placed in optimal positions to ensure the continued flow of traffic. Outdoor seating areas and stages for veterans and dignitaries were set up, and temporary crowd barriers were installed to ensure the safety of attendees. Operatives in high-visibility jackets directed cars and people with Marlborough representatives on hand to assist members of the public throughout. Despite the mixed weather, large crowds came out to honour those that have served, with all three events running precisely to schedule.
